Shaun Balmer

Shaun Balmer, one of our CMM technicians, holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue. He worked for a receiving inspection facility at a major manufacturer before coming to us, where CMM programming caught his interest.

1. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever measured?

I once measured one half of a gear because the other half had been destroyed in a field failure. The engineering team needed to know dimensions of what was left of gear to perform root cause analysis.

2. What do you like most about coming to M2M every day? What do you and all of the other people at M2M have in common?

The variety of material that we inspect at M2M makes every day interesting and unique. The vast amount of knowledge and expertise has also been a great asset for me to rely on. We have in common a commitment to quality and accuracy. Along with that comes the pride we take in our work to make sure that everything we do is 100% correct.

3. What would the world be like if there were no such thing as dimensional inspection? How important is it that “everything fits?”

The world would not be nearly as easy to live and function in. If nothing fit together, then every common item a person uses throughout the day would have to be custom-made. Costs would be enormous.

4. Put your “inventor” hat on. We need a new device that measures fun and creativity. How will it work?

The device would somehow have to give a quantitative number to a person’s smile, because most of the time people are smiling when they’re having fun. It would also have to be able to measure brain waves to see how much creativity is being produced.

5. What do you like to do when you’re not measuring things at M2M?

Enjoy life and spending time with family and friends. I love to golf. I could golf every day and not grow tired of it. Anything related to sports I can watch, play, whatever.
